On the eve of Watchmen

watchmen4

With only one week to go before the release of Watchmen in cinemas across the globe it is definitely time to get excited, very excited.

By all  accounts from those who have seen the early previews, the film lives up to expectations. With it being possibly being the most anticipated film adaptation of a comic ever, especially amongst hardcore fanboys, the anticipation of whether it will live up to the legendary graphic novel of industry-god Alan Moore has been felt by fans and the film’s creators alike. At this point, things are looking good. Just by reading any interview with Zack Snyder (director of 300 and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead), you certainly get the feeling that he is a true fan of the source material and that this film is a labour of love.

For more tangible evidence that the film is in good hands, just check out the all promotional stuff that is available online. The official website http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/ is full of posters, videos and other cool shit that makes you wish you were watching the movie right now damn it! Make sure to visit the site of The New Frontiersmen, based on the fictional right-wing newspaper from Moore’s novel, as it is full of really interesting viral-style articles and other media based on the world of Watchmen.

Who will be watching the Watchmen next week? Well I am for sure, and I guess a whole lot of other people will be too. Will you?

The third issues of both The Dark Tower: Treachery and The Stand: Captain Trips were released last week. Both series of comics are fantastic comic book adaptations set in the worlds of two of Stephen King’s most loved novels and well worth a look.

Treachery is the third series of a planned five covering the early years of Roland Deschain, the hero of The Dark Tower series of novels.

And Captain Trips is the first of a planned six covering the epic novel, The Stand.

For any Watchmen fans out there who might be anxious about Zack Snyder’s films adaptation should check out this SuperHeroHype.com report on the latest footage revealed at a Warner Bros.’s studio.

From the description, I would say this is definitely a film to look forward to, for fans of Alan Moore’s graphic novel, as well as newbies. There is always going to be trepidation when adapting such a complex, and well-loved source material to the screen. And certainly according to some of the comments being left at SuperHeroHype by fans, there is no way the film-makers can please everyone. A little bit of creative license is always going to happen when fitting a story into a new medium. From the trailer, the posters, the comments from Snyder himself and of course the description of this latest footage, I get the feeling that the film will not only look fantastic but will succeed in capturing intricacies of narrative and the mood of the graphic novel as a whole. At least we can all hope!

Latest Stephen King comics out now

with one comment

Two new releases by Marvel Comics based on the work of Stephen King hit stores today:

treachery1

The first issue of The Dark Tower: Treachery will kick off the latest comic book mini-series based on King’s famous The Dark Tower series of novels. It will be the first of six issues. Treachery is the third mini-series set in the world of The Dark Tower, after The Gunslinger Born and The Long Road Home, with two more planned for future release. They are set during the youth of the series’ protagonist Roland Deschain and explore the events that set him on his journey in search of The Dark Tower. The first two series were wonderful, and Treachery looks like to continue those high standards with the amazing artwork by Jae Lee and Richard Isanove a real benchmark in the comic world.

stand1

Also released is the first issue of a new mini-series based on one of Kings most famous novels, The Stand. This mini-series, entitled The Stand: Captain Trips, will be the first of a planned five that will cover the entire novel, with each series made up of six issues. With the huge success of the ongoing The Dark Tower comic adaptations, big things will be expected of  Captain Trips and both Stephen King and Marvel Comics will be looking to deliver.

Watchmen: New posters unveiled for film adaptation

leave a comment »

A whole bunch of posters for the new Watchmen film adapted from the famous graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons can be found at SuperHeroHype.com. The posters look amazing and add to the hope that this film could actually be a pretty good adaptation. It is being helmed by 300 director Zack Snyder, so visually the film is probably in good hands but how he and screenwriters David Hayter & Alex Tse handle the complex narrative of Alan Moore’s masterpiece remains to be seen. If the effort gone into making the posters is translated onto the cinema screen fans should have a film to look forward to.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Comic Con Footage

leave a comment »

The new Wolverine origin film is due to be released in cinemas on 1 May 2008. Below is a link to a post on FLYLYF.com with footage from the film that was shown at Comic Con. Looks quite promising. I have my reservations about Hugh Jackman continuing on as Wolverine after the X-Men films. In the first film I thought he captured Wolverine pretty well but in the following two the character headed in too much of a “wussy” direction for my taste. The comic book character of Logan/Wolverine is much more of a “lone wolf” type, with a lot of aggression and a whole heap of natural coolness. In the third X-Men outing, his whole story line just got too soppy. However, with the “Weapon X” story line in this origin film it looks like we might get a Wolverine much closer to who he is in the comics. Also Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth seems like an odd choice, firstly he is just not physically big enough, BUT there is one moment in the Comic Con footage when he and Wolverine look to be in some sort of mexican showdown, in which we see a bit of the savagery befitting the Sabretooth character. Anyway it IS a film I am looking forward to no matter my reservations. Plus Gavin Wood is quite a promising director.
